Tukino Ski Field is Mt Ruapehu's lesser-known gem.
Located on the mountain's eastern slopes, in the scenic center of New Zealand's North Island, the Tukino Access Road is off the Desert Rd, between Turangi and Waiouru.
Off-road 4WD vehicles can drive up to the field and lodges.
2WD vehicles are not permitted to up the Tukino Access Road past the the 2WD car Park (Base Camp).

DRIVING DIRECTIONS
The turnoff onto Tukino Access Rd is from the Desert Rd, State Highway 1, approximately:
40km South of Turangi
22km North of Waiouru
Lower Car Park (Base Camp)
The lower car park for 2WD vehicles is approx 7km from the highway on a gravel road suitable for most vehicles.
4WD Access ROAD
The 4WD only access road continues a further 7km direct to the ski field, and lodges.
Please do not attempt to drive up the Tukino mountain road until you have confirmed the road is open.

Tukino Ski Field and the lodges are accessible to four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles via the Tukino Access Road when conditions permit.
As mountain conditions are changeable at short notice, you must call to check the road is open, before you proceed past the lower car park. Use of the Tukino Access Road is at your own risk.
